The first construction phase of the core project focused on reconstructing the museum’s largely destroyed east wing and renovating and modernising the two adjoining building sections. A new building was constructed between the north and south buildings to reconnect these two sections.

The façade design of the adjoining building sections has been continued in the new building, whereby exposed concrete has instead been used throughout. A full cast was made of the façade dating from the imperial period for this purpose, using a silicone casting profile.

A special casting process, which had not been applied on this scale before, was implemented to reproduce the historical façade elements. A carefully planned award strategy allowed the contract to be awarded within the planned budget.

The new building among others houses the museum’s refrigerated ethanol collections, which can be accessed by research staff as well as by the general public.

The construction project remained within budget and was successfully handed off in March 2010. The building officially opened to visitors on 13 September 2010.
